SARAJEVO, March 27 (FENA) - Even though authorities in BiH have taken certain positive steps in combating corruption and some progress has been made in that area, corruption remains widespread, said Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH Bruce Berton at the annual conference named "Prevention of Corruption via application of information-communication technologies", which is held by the OSCE Mission to BiH in Sarajevo today.

Berton emphasized that successful repression of corruption is a very complex process and it requires strong judiciary, comprehensive legislative framework, modern technology, but also engagement of citizens of BiH.

He explained that corruption is a serious problem for BiH, because it violates trust of the public in political system, rejects investments and wastes public resources.

Berton reminded that BiH is 89th out of 180 states involved in research done by Transparency International. He emphasized the focus of the conference are ways of using information technologies and that experts from institutions of Slovakia and Montenegro will present best examples from practice.

Berton concluded that fight against corruption is a complex but also a long process and he assured citizens of BiH that the OSCE Mission to BiH will remain a partner in this field.

Ambassador of the Republic of Slovakia to BiH Martin Kačo emphasized that corruption is present within the European Union and that no membership in international institutions or organizations offers immunity from corruption.

Director of the Agency for Prevention of Corruption and Coordination of Fight against Corruption (APIK) BiH Hasim Šabotić called judicial institutions to do their job when it comes to punishing perpetrators of corruption and added he will try his best to establish a system in institutions through preventive measures that will reduce possibility for this instance to the lowest possible level.

He emphasized their primary aim is to raise awareness on importance of reporting corruption in BiH institutions but also to present possibilities of the Law on Protection of Whistle blowers in BiH institutions.

"Judicial system in BiH is the main link in fight against corruption with exclusive focus on prosecutor offices. Our 'cancer wound' are prosecutor offices," he said.

Conference gathered representatives of relevant institutions, entity governments, cantons, municipalities, and representatives of anti-corruption teams and bodies, international organizations and civil society.
