SARAJEVO, June 19 (FENA) - The establishment of national databases and permanent working groups that would be useful to authorities in dealing with cases related to journalist safety is one of the solutions proposed today at the South East Europe Media Conference in Sarajevo.
The focus of the two-day conference, organized by the OSCE Office of Media Representatives in cooperation with the OSCE Mission to BiH, was the development of the media and its sustainability, the safety and security of journalists, the legal framework that relates to media freedom and the establishment of sustainable solutions for public broadcasters.
The Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, Ambassador Bruce G. Berton, said that the freedom of the media is the foundation of any democratic society.
Berton expressed his satisfaction with the conference at which problems and pressures - political, economic and other - were presented with regards to the media in BiH.
“Journalists have to be protected, and the Conference was a good opportunity to talk about models of protection, help the media become more sustainable, and to discuss the role of public broadcasting services in BiH,” said Berton in a statement to FENA.
He recalled the Decision of the OSCE Ministerial Council on the Safety of Journalists adopted in December last year.
The conference was attended by OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Harlem Desir, British Ambassador to BiH Matthew Field and Lord Tariq Ahmad who pointed out the importance of media freedom and the protection of journalists who are doing their job and objectively reporting on events.
In recent years, the conference was held in Sarajevo (BiH), Belgrade (Serbia), Tirana (Albania), Budapest (Hungary) and Struga (Macedonia).
