SARAJEVO, July 10 (FENA) - Raisu-l-ulama of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina Husein effendi Kavazovic and Head of the OSCE Mission to BiH, Ambassador Bruce G. Berton, today signed a Cooperation Statement.

The Islamic Community in BiH and the OSCE Mission to BiH jointly express the readiness to continue and improve cooperation in the areas of the prevention of violent extremism, the rule of law and the protection of human rights, including the promotion of the freedom of religion and beliefs.

Berton and Kavazović reminded that the OSCE Mission and the Islamic Community closely cooperate in the implementation of a wide range of program activities, but also those aimed at the prevention of violent extremism, the promotion of conditions for the exercise of the right to freedom of religion and beliefs, and the promotion of inter-religious dialogue.

“The role of religious communities is crucial in promoting positive values and tolerance in multicultural societies, especially at the local level. That is why I am pleased that with this statement we have confirmed the commitment to continue with our joint activities,” said Ambassador Berton.

Reis Kavazović said that BiH faces many problems, such as hatred towards those who are different or the other, Islamophobia, but the common values on which the Islamic Community and the OSCE insist are respect for the freedom of religion, and the dignity of every human being.

He added that the IC in BiH, through its message and teaching, strives towards instilling these values into the BiH society and its members.

“We, Bosnian Muslims these days mark July 11 - the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica, fully aware of what it meant in the past, what this might mean in the future, unless we are very determined to oppose this phenomenon,” said Kavazović.

We see the OSCE as a partner of the IC in BiH, and we want to continue this cooperation in hope that, as much as possible, we will suppress the negative consequences of hatred as much as possible, and promote the true values upon which each community should rest.

Berton and Kavazović pointed out the long-standing and friendly cooperation between the IC institutions in BiH and the OSCE, and a strategic partnership in a series of projects and activities, promoting freedom of religion and belief, and supporting inter-religious dialogue.

The reason for the signing of today's statement is the launch of the E-Ilmi project, (E-Ilmija), which was developed with the support of the OSCE Mission to BiH and offers an online imam training platform in the field of prevention of violent extremism.
