Ombudsmen: Competition and open market most effectively protect consumers

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, March 12 (FENA) - World Consumer Rights Day, which originates in the Declaration of Fundamental Rights of Consumers and is marked annually on March 15, is an opportunity to reiterate the situation in the field of consumer protection and the importance and role the consumer has as an economy generator and market regulator, stated the Institution of the Ombudsman for Consumer Protection in BiH.

They emphasized that consumer rights are broadly defined and range from the right to choose to the right to live and work in a healthy and sustainable environment.

The Ombudsman Institution points out that consumer rights today are fundamental human rights, since without their satisfaction an individual cannot participate in modern social movements.

"The Ombudsman would like to emphasize on this day consumer protection to the public and draw attention to the most common violations of consumer rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina," it is said in a statement.

They also state that consumers are fully protected when the competitive market is functioning smoothly, as well as all mechanisms of the rule of law.

The most frequent current violations of consumer rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, moreover, occur in the oligarchic market of telecom operators: unilateral alteration of essential elements of the contract (e.g. service prices), and systematic discrimination against consumers (new and old telecom service users).

"Therefore, today, more than ever, every consumer is obliged and empowered to take care of his own consumer interests and to insist on their implementation and protection by all legal and socially acceptable means," said the Institution of the Ombudsman for Consumer Protection in BiH.
