SARAJEVO, September 8 (FENA) - Firefighting equipment was handed over today in Sarajevo to the civil protection headquarters of the municipalities of Bileća, Konjic, Jablanica and Nevesinje.
The Czech government provided the funds, and the UNDP procured equipment within the "Fire Risk Management" project based on the identified needs for the most necessary firefighting equipment presented in the Disaster Response Capacity Assessment report and the Roadmap for BiH.
The Ambassador of the Czech Republic to BiH, Ivana Hlavsová, expressed hope that this assistance, through donated equipment and training for firefighters provided by an expert from the Czech Republic, would contribute to better readiness and resilience of civil protection services in all four municipalities.
The value of the donation is more than 120,000 KM, points out the UNDP Resident Representative in BiH Steliana Nedera and adds that the equipment will contribute to better fire resistance and protection of the lives of the inhabitants of those four municipalities.
As part of the project, a three-day training for firefighters of those municipalities will be organized, as well as a campaign to raise public awareness of the importance of fire protection.
“At the time of the pandemic, we are witnessing that disasters can destroy the efforts made over the years, so we can face more disasters at the same time,” said Nedera, adding that for this reason the UNDP is making significant efforts globally for the countries to adapt to the effects of climate change and improve disaster risk management.
The mayors of Jablanica, Salem Dedić, Bileća, Miljan Aleksić, Nevesinje, Milenko Avdalović and the acting mayor of Konjic, Fadil Tatar thanked for the assistance, emphasizing that it will help them manage potential fire hazards, but also save the lives of citizens.
