SARAJEVO, November 10 (FENA) - UNHCR Representative in BiH Lucie Gagne visited the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs today and presented the basic activities of this institution in BiH, which relate to refugees, displaced persons and stateless persons.
She stressed that in the days to come, the UNCHR is marking the 6th anniversary of the "I Belong" campaign, believing that by 2024, when the campaign ends, Bosnia and Herzegovina will be a country where all cases of statelessness will end, the BiH Ministry of Civil Affairs announced.
Minister Gudeljević thanked UNHCR for its support so far and for the very successful cooperation between the two institutions.
She added that due to the complex structure of BiH, competencies often overlap and that for any instruction, activity or intervention, the Ministry of Civil Affairs needs the consent of the entities in order to respect the will of all factors to which a particular issue relates. Anything to the contrary would be a violation of constitutional jurisdiction.
The same goes for solving the problems faced by stateless persons in BiH. At the end of the conversation, Minister Gudeljević offered two possible solutions for overcoming the problem of the status of displaced persons, refugees and stateless persons.
These are talks with local communities in which stateless persons reside and the establishment of an intensive dialogue at round tables and workshops with the cantonal authorities, given that these authorities pass laws related to these issues.
