Memorials should be turned into genocide documentation and research centers

SARAJEVO, December 11 (FENA) - "Challenges of Genocide Memorialization in Bosnia and Herzegovina" was the topic of a gathering organized today at the Gazi Husrev-bey Library in Sarajevo, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide.

It gathered domestic scientists and experts, who presented their works on the topic of memorialization of genocide in BiH, and made an overview of BiH experiences in the memorialization of genocide and identified the challenges facing BiH society.

One of the participants was the president of the Zvornik Majlis, Mustafa Muharemović, who spoke about the memorialization in the Podrinje area, the place where the majority of mass graves were discovered and the place where the missing are still being searched for.

As he stated, we are facing the issue of memorialization of what happened in the war from 1992 to 1995. There will be no more funerals, he said, but the question is how and in what way to preserve the memory for future generations of the crimes that took place in the area of Podrinje.

"Memorial centers should be turned into documentation and research centers of crimes of genocide. From that, a narrative would emerge - artistic, cultural, but also scientific, which would be presented to future generations who do not remember the difficult period of the war," Muharemović emphasized.

They concluded that a law banning genocide denial should be passed in BiH as soon as possible.
