Fight against climate change in BiH can't wait

SARAJEVO, December 11 (FENA) - The United Nations (UN) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), with the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Sweden and Chile, organized an online high-level interactive event entitled "Fighting Climate Change in Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot wait".

Climate change is the greatest challenge facing humanity today. Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a country where the negative effects of climate change are already clearly visible, recognizes the importance of addressing this challenge and seeks to make these initiatives successful.

On that occasion, the UN Resident Coordinator in BiH, Ingrid Macdonald, said that the action on the issue of climate in BiH and everywhere cannot wait.

“We have a big task ahead of us to reconcile with nature and it will be a big task for the 21st century and it should be the highest priority,” Macdonald pointed out.

She emphasized that reducing emissions is an obligation that everyone must take on.

BiH must also take on the obligation, not only for us, but also for future generations, Macdonald said.

Steliana Nadera, UNDP Resident Representative in BiH, said UNDP as part of the UN family is really proud to join these efforts to combat climate change in BiH.

“We are also working in BiH with institutions to revise the goals of the Paris Agreement to make them more ambitious than those envisaged in 2016 and this has already been prepared. However, we must be aware that the costs of decarburization and just accelerating the economy along the way are also something that is very serious and this issue must be taken into account,” said Nadera.

She also stated that UNDP is really committed to action on climate change and we want to treat these activities for the next five years as an emergency climate situation, environmental situation and accordingly we will work in BiH to take urgent action.

“The social, health and economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic is just a wave compared to the tsunami of climate change,” said Matthew Field, the British Ambassador to BiH.

He hopes that all countries, including BiH, will show focus and ambition in their work on preventing climate change, for us and our children.

“Global problems need global solutions, coordination at all levels is key. Let's be the change we want to see,” said Ambassador Field.
