MOSTAR, February 5 (FENA) - HDZ BiH President Dragan Čović and SDA President Bakir Izetbegović met today in Mostar and discussed the implementation of the SDA-HDZ BiH inter-party agreement signed last year.

They attended the signing of a joint statement on speeding up the European integration process, signed by members of the BiH, FBiH, RS and Brčko District legislatures.

“I believe that we will finish a good part of the work regarding Mostar today in the way we agreed seven or eight months ago. As for the second part of the agreement, i.e. changes in the election legislation, next week we will arrange a joint meeting with representatives of international institutions to discuss it, as well as the reform processes that are a prerequisite for obtaining candidate status. The deadline to do all that is the fifth or sixth month of this year,” Čović told reporters.

He added that as the party leader, he would support the decision of the Travnik HDZ BiH if that party organization decides to boycott the new elections for mayor in Travnik.

SDA President Bakir Izetbegović said that he had talked with Čović about speeding up the European path and that talks on the establishment of government in Mostar should be led by the people of Mostar.

“I am interested in talking about accelerating the European path first of all. I do not intend to talk about the establishment of government in Mostar because people of Mostar should do it, and not to talk at the level of party presidents,” said Izetbegović.

He pointed out that a new chance and new energy should be used, which will be given by the signed document, and that the European path of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been stalled for a year, should be accelerated.

Commenting on the changes in the election legislation, a topic that the HDZ BiH insists on, Izetbegović said that it would be discussed when progress is made in forming the FBiH government.

Asked whether he expects pressure from the international community when it comes to forming the FBiH government and appointing judges of the Constitutional Court, Izetbegović answered that it is not possible to talk about changes in the law and changes to the Constitution, and not respect the Constitution and the law.

“This means appointing judges of the Constitutional Court, starting the formation of the FBiH government, and then possibly discussing changes,” concluded SDA President Bakir Izetbegović.
