SARAJEVO, February 28 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović extended congratulations to the citizens of BiH on the occasion of March 1, the Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The address of a member of the Presidency of BiH, Šefik Džaferović, follows below in its entirety:
"Dear citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina,
I would like to congratulate March 1 - Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A referendum was held on the independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina 29 years ago. In the context of the general uncertainty and crisis caused by the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina bravely and with dignity took their own destiny into their own hands.
It was one of the most significant moments in our overall history. The democratic will expressed on March 1, 1992, was crucial to the survival of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina then chose an independent and complete state, rejecting the idea of its division and annexation to other states.
On this day, we must remember and pay tribute to all those who defended the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina with their lives and ensured its survival. Without their readiness to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs, Bosnia and Herzegovina would not exist today.
Thanks to its legacy on March 1, Bosnia and Herzegovina is today an independent and internationally recognized state, striving to become part of the European and Euro-Atlantic family, as a global symbol of security and prosperity.
The future of our country lies in integration, connection, understanding and joint efforts to provide the generations to come with conditions for building a society based on European values and standards, in which dialogue and mutual respect for our differences will be the foundation of betterment for all.
It is our debt to past, present and future generations.
On that behalf, I once again extend my warmest congratulations to all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the occasion of BiH Independence Day.
Long live our only homeland - Bosnia and Herzegovina," stated Šefik Džaferović.
