Ambrosi: It is time for long-term solutions for migration in BiH

FENA Muhamed Hadžibegić

SARAJEVO, April 23 (FENA) – Chief of Staff of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Eugenio Ambrosi stated today in Sarajevo that it is necessary to prepare a comprehensive system of managing migration flows in BiH by considering long-term solutions.

"This includes the voluntary return of migrants to their countries of origin, then family reunification with those migrants whose family members have legal residence in other countries, and support to the authorities regarding readmission with countries of origin," Ambrosi said.

At the end of his visit to BiH, Ambrosi stated that he is satisfied with the progress of construction work for a permanent center for accommodation of migrants at Lipa site near Bihać, which should be completed in a few weeks.

He added that he had talks with representatives of the BiH authorities and the focus was on the need to continue the humanitarian response to migration flows through BiH.

Ambrosi said that support to local communities that host migrants is especially important, in order to reduce the pressure and difficulties they face.

“Also, it is necessary to strengthen regional cooperation, which would include not only neighboring countries, but also the European Union, whose external border is BiH and migrants intend to move towards it,” Ambrosi underlined.
