SARAJEVO, May 4 (FENA) - US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Eric Nelson congratulated journalists on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day and expressed respect for media professionals because of the risks they take to inform the citizens.
“Journalists are true public servants, and their search for the truth directly contributes to the public good. World Press Freedom Day calls us to pay attention to governments' responsibility to support press freedom and create an environment in which the media can function free of pressure, intimidation and fear,” said the Ambassador.
Nelson pointed out that the work for media professionals has became even harder during the pandemic.
“I share condolences to the families and friends of media professionals who lost their lives during the pandemic. The role of media professionals is even more important at a time when the whole world is facing unprecedented challenges. We stand together to see the situation stabilized and to return to normal life as soon as possible,” he stressed.
The Ambassador said that his team and he are fully aware of the difficulties faced by many journalists in BiH as they report on various issues and work to hold the authorities accountable and inform and closely monitor citizens.
“The US Embassy continues to support freedom of the press and provide assistance fo the development of professional and independent media in BiH. Albert Camus said that free media, can of course be good or bad, but most certainly without freedom, the press will never be anythign but bad. On this World Press Freedom Day, I wish all media professionals in BiH to continue to be strong and courageous as they play one of the most crucial roles in a democracy,” Nelson said on the Twitter profile of the US Embassy in BiH.
