Sattler on Europe Day: BiH's progress towards the EU remains our common goal

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, May 9 (FENA) - The European Union Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Johann Sattler congratulated the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the occasion of Europe Day, wishing that Europe Day serves as a positive reminder that the future of BiH will be brighter if we all work towards that goal.

In a video address, Sattler said that Europe Day is an opportunity to look back at what has been achieved in the past twelve months and see the opportunities that the coming year brings us.

Despite all the frustrations, suffering, and grief brought to us by the coronavirus pandemic, Sattler believes it is a reminder that we can succeed if we are united in a common goal.

He expressed hope that we will beat Covid-19 in the coming months, and that this victory also means that we eagerly expect a recovery.

The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, he said, are now on the road to recovery, as are citizens across the continent.

“The European Union has focused its political and economic resources to ensure that recovery is strong and sustained,” he said, noting that part of the EU’s macroeconomic program is a nine billion Euro economic and investment plan for the Western Balkans," said Ambassador Sattler.

He reminded that a significant EU assistance program is already being implemented in BiH, through the procurement of medical equipment, the preservation of jobs and support for the economy.

Sattler believes that despite the enormous challenges posed by the pandemic, Bosnia and Herzegovina's progress towards the European Union has not been stopped and remains a common goal.

Further progress, he pointed out, can and should be achieved during 2021.

"The plan is comprehensive and demanding, including constitutional amendments to strengthen democratic accountability and fight discrimination, timely and effective implementation of court rulings and steps to ensure that the political, electoral and administrative systems operate more efficiently in the service of citizens," Sattler said.

None of these changes, he said, are simple, but they are not impossible, and "everything is for the benefit of the citizens of BiH," said the EU Delegation to BiH.

"Enormous difficulties in the past year have shown that concrete and principled progress can be achieved even in the most difficult of circumstances, as long as we have a common goal. Let this Europe Day serve as a positive reminder that the future of BiH will be brighter if we all work towards that goal," said in his message the European Union Ambassador to BiH Johann Sattler to the citizens of BiH on the occasion of Europe Day celebrated on May 9.
