SARAJEVO, June 3 (FENA) - President of the Croat Democratic Union (HDZ) Dragan Čović said today after a meeting with President of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) Bakir Izetbegović that they discussed many issues, but that the HDZ's stance remains that equality and legitimate representation of the constituent peoples are not up for debate.
He says that they are now in a situation where witnesses to the Agreement signed in Mostar on June 17, 2020, should be called to join them because there is a framework for Mostar and a framework for the Election Law, which is why he believes that talks with them should be organized soon.
He confirmed that there were talks on the election of members of the Presidency of BiH and the House of Peoples, where the HDZ wants to respect all the judgments of the Constitutional Court of BiH on the representation of constituent peoples and all the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.
Čović believes that these decisions could be implemented together and if a harmonized position is reached on the solution to these issues, which should be as simple as possible, the changes to the BiH Constitution would go hand in hand with the need to pass the amendments to the Election Law.
These changes to the Constitution would be of limited capacity, says the HDZ leader, because it is difficult to work on changes of the highest legal act in the country since it has not happened in the last 15 years.
He also expressed the view that a solution should be reached by the end of June, and then talks will follow on how to translate it into legislation and get the support of other partners in the parliamentary procedure who want similar solutions in BiH.
"There are things that will certainly not be discussed as far as the HDZ is concerned, and that is the issue of equality of the constituent peoples and their legitimate representation, and we can look for solutions for everything else. This month is a month for reaching agreements," concluded the HDZ leader Dragan Čović.
