Banja Luka host of the event 'Protect the Planet'

FENA Press release

BANJA LUKA, July 1 (FENA) - The event "Protect the Planet" within the projects financed by Sweden and implemented by UNDP in Bosnia and Herzegovina is being held within the complex of the Kastel fortress in Banja Luka.

Projects that will be presented to the public through various activities focused on the importance of protecting the environment and the planet Earth are "Green Economic Development" (GED) and "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Roll-out Support".

The thread that connects these projects, whose activities are implemented in cooperation with partners and institutions at all levels of government in BiH, are the Sustainable Development Goals and Environmental Protection. Sustainable development goals address global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice, and represent a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future, organizers said.

UN Resident Coordinator in BiH Ingrid Macdonald pointed out that this year was marked by the progress achieved in the adoption of the Framework of Sustainable Development Goals in BiH by the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which confirms the state's commitment to sustainable development.

“It is important that the Framework also paves the way for a fair, green and inclusive recovery from COVID-19. Although public budgets will be central to achieving the goals set in the SDG Framework in BiH, this Framework recognizes that authorities will need to mobilize broad partnerships with other actors such as the private sector, international and domestic financial institutions and use innovative financing methods to increase development impact,” said Macdonald.

Ambassador Miranda Sidran from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH stated that Bosnia and Herzegovina has accepted the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda as the most important obligations whose gradual fulfillment will enable a better life: improving social, economic and environmental aspects of life. The adopted Framework for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals is based on the assessment of key trends in the development of opportunities and obstacles, especially in the context of BiH's accession to the European Union.

During the ceremony for SDG Business Pioneers Award in BiH today at the Kastel fortress in Banja Luka, an exhibition was set up showing the multiple benefits, economic, environmental and social, as well as energy renovation of 229 public buildings throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.
