SARAJEVO, July 11 (FENA) - The Ambassador of the United States of America to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Eric Nelson, stated in a video message shown today at the commemoration in Srebrenica that crimes and judgments are not a mirror image for an entire nation.
He pointed out that court verdicts for those who committed genocide underline individual responsibility and that they hope to bring a sense of justice to the families of the victims.
On behalf of the American people, he joined all those in BiH mourning the more than 8,000 victims killed in the town in 1995, adding that denying or glorifying the Srebrenica genocide is unacceptable and undermines the mutual trust needed for a stable, prosperous and peaceful future.
"The United States calls on all political leaders to refrain from opening wounds from the past with inflammatory rhetoric that introduces divisions, as well as from exploiting and manipulating the legacy of the wars of the 1990s. True leadership requires urgent and concrete steps to promote reconciliation with compassion and dignity, and joint investment and work on a common future for all peoples in BiH," said Nelson.
He added that his country remains firm in its support for all who are willing to work in a spirit of reconciliation and are focused on creating opportunities for prosperity for all citizens.
"The victims of the genocide in Srebrenica, the survivors, the families as well as the new generations deserve a peaceful and prosperous future. By focusing on trust and building a prosperous future, we can ensure that tragic events from the past do not happen again," Nelson emphasized.
