LUKAVAC, August 9 (FENA) - Thirty-one-year-old Samir Gabeljić from Lukavac last year launched an initiative via the social network to name the street in that city Victims of Genocide in Srebrenica.

The original goal was for the group to have 8,372 members, but more than ten thousand members gathered to support his idea. After an online petition, the initiative was submitted to the Municipal Council in Lukavac and to the mayor of this municipality, Edin Delić, to rename the part of Režepa ef. Muminhodžić Street into the Victims of Genocide in Srebrenica Street. Along with this initiative, Gabeljić also worked on the possibility of building a memorial in Lukavac for the victims of genocide.

“I started the activity on the preparation of project documentation knowing which street it will be and it went very well, a certain number of people gathered who supported the idea,” said Gabeljić.

An interesting fact is that Gabeljić and his friend drafted the memorial.

Financial assistance in the construction of this memorial was provided by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of the Government of the Tuzla Canton, the Ministry of Refugees and Displaced Persons in the Government of the Federation of BiH and the Municipality of Lukavac.

“The long-term goal is to never forget the genocide in Srebrenica, to make this a lasting seal. Therefore, one guarantee that the genocide in Srebrenica will never happen again to anyone is that we never forget,” said Gabeljić.
