Franco: Scenes from the movie 'New Order' are not that far from reality

SARAJEVO, August 18 (FENA) - Mexican director, screenwriter and producer Michel Franco said today as a guest within the "Coffee with ..." program of the Sarajevo Film Festival that dystopian scenes from the film "New Order" are not as far from reality as many think.

“Technically, it is a dystopian story because it did not happen, but it still seems that we are one step away from an even worse scenario than the one in the film. Sometimes people ask why there is so much violence in my films and then I remind them that what happened to you in the 90s was far worse,” said Franco.

He explained that in the film shown last night as part of the Open air program, there is an explosion of violence out of frustrations that have long accumulated due to social inequality.

“There are 60 million people who are extremely poor in Mexico, the middle class is struggling to survive, while one or two percent of the population holds the vast majority of wealth and the question is how the "explosion" has not already occurred. That is the reality of the whole of Latin America, it is the same in Brazil, which has twice as many inhabitants as Mexico,” Franco pointed out.

He believes that what is shown in my film is not exaggerated at all because the film does not have to be just fun, although it should always be fun, but it is much more important to be a wake-up call because we are very close to such a scenario.

Franco stressed that it is time for such a call because there are 100 murders a day in Mexico, mostly women, the cartels are better armed than the regular army and the line between official and unofficial is very blurred.

“The situation with coronavirus vaccines in particular has shown inequality between countries. Some countries are already talking about the third dose of vaccination, while most of the world has not and will not receive the first for a long time,” Franco reminded.

Last night, Michel Franco was awarded the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, which he received at last year's 26th Sarajevo Film Festival.

His film "New Order" premiered in Venice 2020, where he won the Silver Lion - Grand Jury Prize, and was screened at the 27th SFF as part of the Open Air program.
