ZENICA, October 26 (FENA) - The Zenica Closed-Type Correctional Institution (KPZZT), with the financial support of the Turkish Agency for Coordination and Cooperation (TIKA), officially opened a sewing factory today.

The director of the Zenica Penitentiary, Redžo Kahrić, pointed out that, on the basis of a mutual agreement signed on April 28 this year, TIKA invested 168,000 KM for the opening of this plant and procured 60 new sewing machines and equipment for the preparation of protective wards for convicts and security guards, but also bedding, protective masks and the like.

"The plant contributes to the process of re-socialization of convicted persons, in the execution of a prison sentence in this institution. With this project, the administration is able to employ a larger number of convicted persons, who want to work, and the advantage of this project is that it is located within the Institute. Thus, convicted persons, who are serving long-time prison sentences, are able to be employed. The significance of this project, which we realized with TIKA, has the effect of increasing the number of engaged convicts, who have the opportunity to acquire funds through work-occupation treatment that can improve their living conditions while serving their prison sentences," Kahrić pointed out.

With the money earned, he noted, prisoners can help their families, but also gain knowledge and experience in the profession that will enable them a social life after serving a prison sentence. For a start, prisoners will earn 300 KM per month.

TIKA Vice President Mahmut Cevik pointed out that the agency has been in BiH since 1995, and supports its development. For the last 20 years, as he said, they have realized 2,000 projects in total.

"Because this is an interesting project, we are here to attend the opening of a production plant, which is economic in one aspect and educational in another. I think that this is our first project we are doing in a prison, among 5,000 realized projects in the Balkans," Cevik pointed out.
