Most severely infected with coronavirus have not been vaccinated

SARAJEVO, November 1 (FENA) - More than 90 percent of those seriously ill with coronavirus, who are in hospital, are unvaccinated.

Assistant FBiH Minister of Health, Goran Čerkez, told FENA and called on the population to get vaccinated, but he also called on doctors to engage as much as possible and promote vaccination.

"Practically every resident should be contacted and interviewed, and the vaccine should be approached. We need to go to the public, to places of public gathering, starting from shopping malls, because that is the only way we can speed up vaccination,“ said Čerkez.

With the arrival of colder weather, the number of infected is growing, but the epidemiological situation is still stable. Čerkez said there was a 26 per cent increase in infections compared to last week.

“On a weekly level, we have 3,099 patients with Covid,“ stated Čerkez, adding that a small number of vaccinated people contribute to that.

However, the situation with the number of vaccinated is not bad because it is constantly improving.

"The number is growing day by day and we can say that we are reaching the goal of the World Health Organization, that by the end of this year about 40 percent of the world's population will be immunized,“ Čerkez pointed out, reminding that 28 percent of the population in BiH has been vaccinated.

It is estimated that between seven and ten percent of the population has been vaccinated outside the country.

He announced that new quantities of vaccines are arriving and that Moderna vaccine had already arrived, and that 120,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine should arrive in FBiH by the end of the week.

"We hope that this will speed up the course of vaccination. It is currently the only instrument that brings us back to normal life,“ Čerkez emphasized.

He said that the Sarajevo Canton has made good progress in that direction, that the vaccination rate is close to 50 percent, unlike in West Herzegovina or Canton 10, where immunization ranges between ten and 12 percent.

"It is assumed that a large number of people have been vaccinated in neighboring countries, bearing in mind that a large number of people from that area have dual citizenship,“ Čerkez pointed out.

Regarding the favoring of certain vaccines, he said that every vaccine that has been checked by the Agency for Medicines is safe and effective.

"The story about the choice of vaccines, especially for the population that is not an expert in such a decision, does not stand. It is very important that you receive the vaccine that is available,“ Čerkez emphasized.
