SARAJEVO, November 10 (FENA) - Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Šefik Džaferović said that the High Representative of the International Community in BiH Christian Schmidt gave a realistic overview of the situation in BiH and what is stated in his report reflects the real situation in the country.
In an interview with TRT World, Džaferović said that it is very disturbing because BiH is in the biggest crisis since the signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement until today, and it is created by the leadership. of the BiH entity Republika Srpska, led by the BiH Presidency member and the SNSD leader Milorad Dodik.
"By boycotting the work of state institutions and threatening to destroy the achieved reforms with the ultimate goal of secession, those actions have been contrary to the provisions of the Dayton Peace Agreement. We will not allow the achieved level of reforms to be reversed or attempts of secession, and the path that Dodik is leading us on can lead to a conflict," Džaferović added.
He believes that Dodik should learn an elementary lesson from history because everyone who attacked the state of BiH ended up in the Hague tribunal and in the dustbin of history. That is how Radovan Karadžić, Ratko Mladić and Slobodan Milosević all ended up.
"That is how Dodik will end up if he does not stop these crazy actions. Dodik and all retrograde forces in BiH and outside BiH are encouraged by the lack of sufficient activity by the international community that is part of the Dayton PA. The Peace Implementation Council (PIC) is not ordinary interventionism, but a prescribed mechanism that enabled BiH to function normally," Džaferović reminded.
He points out that as the role of the international community has waned, Dodik has "raised his head" as he attacked the Office of the High Representative (OHR) which has mechanisms to stop him in a mad campaign and help the BiH institutions do their job.
"Russia is playing a different game and that has led to a kind of rift within the international community. I hope that this will stop and that reason will prevail, because the alternative to building a normal and functional state is the conflict in BiH and in the Western Balkans, and no one needs that," Džaferović underlined.
He believes that everything points to the conclusion that Dodik is under the influence of the Russian Federation, and their attitude towards the situation in BiH is such that Dodik is constantly supported in every position he takes, which is contrary to the DPA.
He is of the opinion that the Russian Federation has no strategic interests in the Western Balkans because the region is on its way to membership in the European Union and NATO, and EU and NATO member states are all around it.
"Russia is playing a tactical game when it comes to BiH and the Western Balkans, with the goal of having it as a trading currency with other world powers, for its other strategic issues," said Džaferović.
The absence of a European perspective of the countries of the Western Balkans and the sending of various messages from the countries of the EU to the countries of the region in the accession process is one of the reasons leading to the escalation of the crisis.
"It is not good when we receive such signals from the EU because EU membership is vital for the region and it is an important security issue not only for the Balkans but also for Europe. It is necessary for the EU to be more involved in working with these countries in order to become members as soon as possible," he stated.
When it comes to the United States, Džaferović says that this country is a great friend of BiH. They worked on the establishment and implementation of peace and numerous reforms that Dodik is now trying to collapse, which is why he is of the opinion that the United States will never give up the Dayton Peace Agreement and allow it to be violated regardless of the current problems in the world.
Bearing in mind the activism that began to show after the arrival of President Joe Biden when teams in charge of BiH and the Western Balkans have been formed, this shows that a stronger US engagement in BiH and the Western Balkans region is gradually emerging.
