BRUSSELS, November 30 (FENA) - The Federal News Agency (FENA), together with 15 other news agencies in Europe, is launching the "European Newsroom" project. The European Commission also announced its support for the project.
The European Commission announced it would support the development of a “European Newsroom” bringing together 16 news agencies.
Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová noted that by working together across borders, media are stronger.
"We have seen the incredible results of cross-border investigations, such as the recent Pandora papers. The Commission is increasing its support for this type of collaboration, with the European Newsroom today and a series of new journalism partnerships by the end of the year," said Jourová.
The Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, who opened the European Media Forum this morning, said that they are organizing Europe's information space and increasing citizens' access to quality information.
"This first-ever pan-European newsroom – which we announce today – will allow journalists to report jointly on EU affairs and promote a spirit of collaboration back at home. Next year, we will present a Media Freedom Act to boost media pluralism and improve the resilience of the sector as a whole," said Breton.
Under the coordination of German agency DPA, the following news agencies are participating: AFP (France), ANSA (Italy), Agerpres (Romania), APA (Austria), ATA (Albania), Belga (Belgium), BTA (Bulgaria), EFE (Spain), Europa Press (Spain), FENA (Bosnia and Herzegovina), HINA (Croatia), MIA (North Macedonia), STA (Slovenia), Tanjug (Serbia) and TASR (Slovakia).
The consortium will launch in January, and the integrated newsroom is expected to begin work next summer. The aim is to encourage cooperation at the EU level and news about the EU in several languages.
The Managing Director of the Federal News Agency FENA, Elmir Huremović, also expressed satisfaction with the successful development of the project, which was recognized as important by the European Commission.
"In the past year or so, we have worked intensively with colleagues from other agencies on this project and I am glad that our joint editorial office in Brussels will finally come to life. From the perspective of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it should be an important step towards improving the access of our citizens to quality, impartial and verified information on EU-related topics.
Verified and credible information as such is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity at a time when we are faced with a flood of misinformation. The participation of the best European news agencies, in this project, FENA included, will guarantee that the focus of the work of "European Newsroom" will be on truthful reporting.
I am glad that, as the leading news agency in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we will contribute to the media coverage of the developments in Brussels as an important European and Euro-Atlantic center, " Huremović pointed out.
