SARAJEVO, February 8 (FENA) - The City of Sarajevo and the Olympic Mountains Bjelašnica, Jahorina, Igman and Trebević from February 8 to 19, 1984, were the sites of meetings and competitions of athletes from around the world, who participated in the 14th Winter Olympic Games, hosted by Sarajevo.

This magnificent sporting event was preceded by extensive preparations so that the city and the surrounding mountains would be ready to welcome competitors from all over the world, as well as numerous guests who visited Sarajevo in that period.

The works were in full swing on the construction of sports arenas, Olympic facilities, the necessary infrastructure, and other facilities necessary for a pleasant stay.

The opening ceremony of the 14th Winter Olympic Games was held on February 8 at the Koševo Stadium, and the honor of lighting the Olympic flame, which illuminated Sarajevo until February 19, went to skater Sanda Dubravčić. Skier Bojan Križaj took the Olympic oath on behalf of the athletes.

During the Games, athletes from 49 countries competed to win the glorious Olympic medals. The program included alpine skiing, bobsled and sledding, hockey and figure skating, biathlon, Nordic skiing and ski jumps.

Along with numerous guests, the sports competitions were followed by a large number of domestic and foreign journalists, which meant that positive images from Sarajevo and the Olympic Mountains were sent out to the world every day.

The Games ended in a magnificent way on February 19 with a solemn ceremony at the Zetra Olympic Hall, and the then President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch said that they were the best-organized games so far.

The Olympic Snowflake and Vučko, which were the symbol and the mascot of the Games, still remind us of the time when Sarajevo hosted athletes, as well as a large number of guests from all over the world.

Part of the memory of the Olympics in Sarajevo is kept by the Olympic Museum, which will, as part of the celebration of the anniversary of the Olympic Games, organize numerous events, including open days for visitors.

The Museum will have a free of charge entry today, February 8, on the day when the 14th Winter Olympic Games began, then on weekends on February 12 and 13 and February 18, when a joint program with the Sarajevo Canton Tourism Board and the City of Sarajevo will be hosted.
