SARAJEVO, April 21 (FENA) - A group of deputies from the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH PA), whose work is supported by the International Republican Institute based in Washington, sent a parliamentary initiative obliging the Council of Ministers of BiH to prepare and send to the parliamentary procedure amendments to the Criminal Code of BiH within 60 days at the latest, which will designate attack against journalists as a special criminal offense.

The proponents of this initiative are MPs: Aida Baručija, Saša Magazinović, Edita Đapo, Jasmin Emrić, Mirjana Marinković Lepić, Šemsudin Mehmedović and Dženan Džonlagić.

The explanation of the initiative states that as persons performing the function of promoting freedom of speech and basic democratic principles of free debate and public information, journalists should be protected from physical violence, threats to the safety of journalists and their families and other security threats.

The position of the proposer is that any kind of endangering the safety of journalists is inadmissible.

Recognizing the importance of protection and safety of journalists, the proposers also emphasize the importance of defining the status of a journalist, given the multitude of IT opportunities that abuse this profession and jeopardize its credibility.

“We want to encourage the strengthening of self-regulatory mechanisms and public accountability of journalists and media workers, as well as promoting the values of professional and ethical journalism as a basis for the production and editing of media content,”it is said in a statement.
