SARAJEVO, May 17 (FENA) - BiH Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Staša Košarac met today in Sarajevo with OSCE Coordinator for Economic and Environmental Activities, Igli Hasani, who briefed him on the construction of a radioactive waste disposal at the site of Trgovska gora, as well as the activities that the ministry, in coordination with the competent entity institutions, is undertaking to resolve this issue.

“We are aware that Croatia will not give up and that it is actively working on the construction of the disputed landfill in the immediate vicinity of the border with BiH. This is completely unacceptable and worrying for us, primarily due to the direct danger to the environment and the health of 250,000 people from the municipalities in the Una river basin,” Košarac pointed out.

In this regard, he asked for the help and support of the OSCE Mission, which in its mandate, among other things, addresses the issue of environmental protection.

“All levels of government in BiH are motivated and determined to fight against the obvious intention of Croatia to dispose of nuclear waste in our backyard, based on expert arguments and analyses, and the application of the ESPOO Convention and other international protocols,” said Košarac.

The interlocutors discussed the need for regional integration and co-operation, with a focus on economic issues. Košarac stated that the "Open Balkans" initiative represents an excellent opportunity for the countries of the Western Balkans, primarily due to attracting investments, higher economic growth and reducing unemployment in the region.

According to him, preserving the existing and opening new markets is extremely important for the development and improvement of the domestic economic sector.

It was pointed out that energy is an important strategic development area both in BiH and the countries of the region, and special attention should be paid to gasification processes.
