SARAJEVO, May 22 (FENA) - Today, 30 years ago, Bosnia and Herzegovina became a full member of the UN. In New York, the flag of our homeland was raised. This act, one of the most important in our thousand-year history, confirmed the international legal subjectivity of Bosnia and Herzegovina as an independent and sovereign state, SDA President Bakir Izetbegović wrote on his Facebook profile.
He added that a brutal aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina followed, resulting in irreparable human casualties and enormous material damage. What the aggressors failed to achieve with the campaign of mass killing, persecution, demolition, and then genocide is the division of Bosnia and Herzegovina and ultimately the cessation of its existence, Izetbegović points out.
“We managed to defend ourselves, preserve our country that the world recognized 30 years ago and ensure peace by signing the Dayton Agreement, and once again confirm the continuity of the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina. After the signing of the Dayton Agreement, years of renewal and strengthening of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina followed. However, attacks on its sovereignty and territorial integrity have never stopped,” he said.
He says that these attacks are not guided by weapons, but by political, media, intelligence and other means.
“Patriotic forces that managed to save Bosnia and Herzegovina from aggression are being attacked by constant blockades and crises, attempts to revise the character of the war and question the honor and integrity of those most deserving of survival and subsequent development. Just as they failed during the armed aggression, they will not succeed now. The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was raised in front of the UN building on the East River on May 22, 1992, will remain there forever. It is a testimony to a brave and honorable struggle, not only for the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also for all the values on which the United Nations is based. I extend my sincere congratulations to all citizens and friends who carry our Homeland in their hearts on the occasion of this great anniversary. We will continue to build and strengthen Bosnia and Herzegovina together and we will raise, if God wills, its flag in Brussels, in front of the headquarters of the European Union and NATO,” says Izetbegović.
