SARAJEVO, November 14 (FENA) - The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in cooperation with the City of Sarajevo organized a conference in Sarajevo today, where it was concluded that building cities adapted to young people is a key element in building a society that will be more resistant to demographic changes.

"The City of Sarajevo adopted the Youth Strategy for the period from 2020 to 2024, thanks to which we are creating space for young people and the development of their ideas. We especially encourage entrepreneurship, we help in the implementation of start-ups for young people who want to start their own businesses for the first time. We also offer young people opportunities for volunteering and internships in the City Administration. Organizations such as UNFPA help us in all of these activities," said Mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić.

Director of the UNFPA Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Florence Bauer, emphasized that the conference will end tomorrow, when the world's population will reach eight billion people.

This, she says, shows that humanity is living longer, but this is not the case in all countries, because in some the population is increasing, while in others the population is decreasing.

Bauer points out that the number of inhabitants in Bosnia and Herzegovina is decreasing and the reason for this is the departure of the population and the low fertility rate, which is associated with young people. She is of the opinion that something must be done in cities and municipalities so that young people who are thinking of leaving BiH change their minds and stay in BiH. Therefore, "young people should be at the center of policies, have access to education and the labor market, and be provided with services so that young people can start their own families".

In this regard, the Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Edin Forto, pointed out that it is crucial to invest in facilities for young people aged 15 to 25, and to ensure that they feel that they are living in a safe and healthy environment. He underlined that the SC Government has done a lot for young families. Among other things, it provided maternity benefits and subsidies for kindergartens.

With the goal of using every potential of a young person to improve human capital and demographic resilience, UNFPA, together with the associations of municipalities in the cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, launched an initiative within the framework of which the conference "Building cities adapted to young people in a world of 8 billion people" was organized.
