SARAJEVO, March 20 (FENA) – International Francophonie Day is celebrated on March 20 in French-speaking countries, but also in those countries where the French language is less widespread. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, seven countries "joined forces" to mark the Francophonie Day with a rich cultural program.

The embassies of Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Luxembourg, Romania, Serbia and Switzerland are participating in the Francophonie Day program this year.

As pointed out at today's press conference at the French Institute in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the mission of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) is to promote the French language, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity, in the service of peace, democracy and human rights.

Ambassador of France to BiH Christine Toudic said that the French language is spoken by 321 million people on five continents.

“The International Organization of the Francophonie, which gathers 88 countries and governments, aims to promote the French language throughout the world, as well as cultural and linguistic diversity in the service of peace, democracy and human rights. Knowing the French language means expanding your horizons, getting to know and seeing the world differently, and there are also new job opportunities in numerous economically strong areas,” said Toudic.

She added that a rich cultural program for all ages has been prepared for this year's Francophonie Day.

Head of the diplomatic office of Belgium, Benjamin Sturtewagen, points out that in his country more than 40 percent of the population is Francophone, and that the values promoted by Francophone are important for the population of Belgium.

“One of the missions of the International Organization of the Francophonie is the promotion of cultural values. The diplomatic office of Belgium is extremely happy to offer a concert in which opera singer and tenor Jasmin Bašić will perform, together with opera singers from the National Theatre, who prepared a program of French chansons,” said Sturtewagen.

During the Francophone Film Week, from March 22 to 29, the citizens will be able to attend film screenings in Sarajevo, Mostar and Banja Luka, as well as in six other cities throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.
