SARAJEVO, May 3 (FENA) - Former members of the Green Berets and the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBIH) gathered today in Sarajevo's Hamdija Kreševljaković Street, formerly Dobrovoljačka, to mark the anniversary of the events of May 2 and 3, 1992 which, as it was said on the occasion, were crucial for the defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its capital.

Traditional gathering, laying flowers and honoring BiH defenders served as an opportunity to evoke memories of the events that, according to the participants, determined the fate of Bosnia and Herzegovina and preserved its integrity and independence, thanks to the superhuman efforts of the defenders.

- We mark the second and third of May as the most significant date in the defense of the sovereign and independent state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. On May 2, 1992, the former JNA openly sided with the aggressors and aggression. Unfortunately, although many Bosnians and Herzegovinans at that time believed in brotherhood and unity and believed that the JNA was the guarantor of security, it showed its true face - said Vahid Alić, president of the Association 'Green Berets' of the municipality of Stari Grad.

In reviewing the events of May 2, 1992, he recalled how the JNA, supported by paramilitary formations of the then SDS, Serbian volunteers and special forces from Niš, launched a fierce attack on the institutions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

- First, the city was shelled, and then with tanks, transporters and people, they launched an attack on the building of the Presidency of the then RBiH with the aim of conquering and overthrowing the newly elected government, and in order to prove to the international community that this government cannot manage this country - said Alić. stating that diversion was carried out in parallel and the main post office was set on fire, and the building of Television, Elektroprivreda, the Hum repeater were shelled...

He reminded, at the same time, that on May 3, members of the JNA did not comply with the agreement and that they left the barracks in Bistrik in full military gear, causing an incident by shooting at citizens and defenders, heading in the direction of Skenderija, where the exchange was agreed upon.

He underlined that six members of the JNA were killed in the exchange of fire, specifying that this was decisively and clearly confirmed in one of the last interviews in 2002 by Milutin Kukanjac, then commander of the Second Military District of the JNA.

Addressing the participants of the meeting, Alić recalled the chronology of events, starting with the attack on the building of the BiH Presidency on May 2 and the attempted coup d'état, up to the negotiations regarding the exchange of the first president of the RBiH Presidency, Alija Izetbegović, who is with the delegation after returning from the peace talks in Lisbon was captured at Sarajevo International Airport and taken to the barracks in Lukavica.

Unfortunately, in connection with the events in the former Dobrovoljačka, controversies and different interpretations continue even today, which, above all, concern the numerical state of the fallen members of the JNA.

Serious controversies are also caused by the fact that in front of BiH. the "Dobrovoljačka case" was reactivated by the judiciary and that proceedings are being conducted in the Court against civil and military officials of the then RBiH, despite the fact that the Hague Tribunal (ICTY) had previously declared in connection with that case, marking the JNA column as a legitimate military target.

Answering a journalist's question in this regard, Alić said that it was an attempt to equate the aggressor and the victim and to revise historical facts, saying that the truth and facts are on the side of the defender.

Unfortunately, he added, there are also those who, according to their opinion, civilians and citizens of Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina were "legitimate military targets".
