SARAJEVO, May 16 (FENA) - Officials of the Sarajevo Canton, the European Union, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Embassy of Austria in Bosnia and Herzegovina presented today an outdoor photo exhibition on the results of the project "Energy efficiency in public buildings in the Sarajevo Canton".

They stressed the importance of this project, the results of which should be warming of buildings and lower heating bills, as well as less environmental pollution.

The implementers expect a halving of energy consumption and CO2 emissions, better quality of heating and cooling in buildings, and thus greater comfort, as well as significant savings in the Sarajevo Canton budget.

The project envisages the energy renovation of 40 public buildings in Sarajevo, including kindergartens, high schools, dormitories and health centers, and the renovation of 15 has been completed so far, including several elementary school buildings.

Presenting a photo exhibition of buildings before and after rehabilitation, set up on the promenade in front of the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo, cantonal Prime Minister Nihad Uk said that his government would accept energy efficiency projects wholeheartedly.

During the presentation of the exhibition, the Ambassador of the European Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Johann Sattler, said that energy will be the main topic in the coming years and stated the European Union's aspiration to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 55 percent by 2030.

Austria's Ambassador to BiH Ulrike Hartmann, speaking about the role of her country, the investment of half a million euros, as well as the additional investment of the same amount for other projects in the Sarajevo Canton, emphasized that Austria supports the improvement of energy efficiency in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The project in question here primarily contributes to saving money for heating and better preservation of environment, which is very important in Sarajevo and similar environments due to episodes of enormous air pollution. Every citizen benefits from the implementation of the measures, the Ambassador emphasized.

She adds that Austria also contributes to the implementation of projects in other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina and emphasizes that the results will be sustainable only if the authorities continue to take measures, and citizens also contribute in their own way because "the environment deserves our effort".

Director of the EBRD in BiH, Manuela Naessl, stated that the EBRD has been cooperating with the Government of the Sarajevo Canton since 2018 on the formation of a green action plan, on the improvement of public utility services.

"We need to invest a lot in achieving a green city because we all deserve a better environment," said Naessl.

The Project "Energy efficiency in public buildings in the Sarajevo Canton" has been implemented by the cantonal government since 2020 with the financial support of the EBRD, the European Union and Austria.
