ZAGREB, June 20 (FENA) - Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, Andrej Plenković, stated today after the joint session that as far as Trgovska Gora and the low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste disposal site from the Krško nuclear power plant are concerned, it is located two kilometers from the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"It is in a hilly and uninhabited area. According to the plan, low- and medium-level radioactive waste from the Krško nuclear power plant would be stored there," Plenković said.

He added that it is waste that "radiates very little".

"Čerkezovac is not intended for the storage of spent nuclear fuel, which belongs to highly radioactive waste," said Plenković.

According to him, the storage technology that would be used there is used in most other countries that have nuclear power plants.

"We are not aware of any incident or unexpected release of radioactive activity into the environment anywhere in countries that had similar disposal sites. Of course, it would be built in such a way as to be seismically resistant. That is very important," Plenković said.

He also emphasized that any contamination of groundwater would be impossible.

Plenković noted that the radioactive waste that would be there is solid, hence it is not "neither in liquid nor gaseous state and cannot be wasted".

"If such a landfill were to be built there, Croatia would apply the highest possible standards as a responsible member of the EU towards itself, and then also towards neighboring BiH," said Plenković.

He pointed out that Croatia has no interest in endangering its inhabitants, let alone the inhabitants of neighboring and friendly Bosnia and Herzegovina.
