SDA: Mostar must not miss another round of local elections

FENA Press release

MOSTAR, May 8 (FENA) - The City Board of the Party of Democratic Astion (SDA) in Mostar expressed regret that the Central Election Commission (CEC) of BiH did not call local elections for the City Council of Mostar, but also considers it very important that the CEC left the possibility for elections to be held in Mostar.

"We would like to remind you that in the past period, the City Board of SDA in Mostar, in cooperation with the party leadership, made great efforts to reach a solution and elections, but that it did not depend only on the political will of our party," said the SDA Mostar City Board.

As they pointed out, the position of the SDA in the negotiations was clear from the beginning and based on a firm commitment that the elections must finally take place, because Mostar and its citizens can no longer wait. According to them, the SDA sought a compromise solution and did not presuppose the elections in Mostar with some other issues in BiH.

"The SDA option was never any 'packages', but a clear position to get out of the political crisis and to finally provide Mostar citizens with active and passive suffrage in the interest of all, based on the best European models of local self-government," the party said.

The SDA City Board in Mostar believes that Mostar must not miss another round of local elections in BiH and that efforts should be continued to reach a solution, because, as they point out, there is still time for that.

"Absolutely everything should be done to reach an agreement through the BiH Parliament. If that does not happen, the City Board of SDA Mostar believes that its share of responsibility based on the judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg can and must be taken over by the Constitutional Court of BiH, because this judicial institution has a mandate to resolve this political 'Gordian knot'. Unfortunately, Mostar was drawn into the broader framework of the political crisis in BiH against its will, and that was by no means the idea of the SDA, no matter how hard some tried to put a sign of equality and responsibility between different parties," stated the City Board of SDA in Mostar.
