SARAJEVO, June 1 (FENA) - At today's session of the Joint Committee on Defense and Security of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina, only the current activities of BiH in cooperation with NATO, the status and realization of the Reform Program of Bosnia and Herzegovina were discussed.

The activities of the BiH security forces and the BiH institutions with NATO in the past period were presented, and it was stated that BiH has excellent cooperation with NATO member states and that NATO is ready to help BiH.

According to the Chairman of the Commission for Cooperation with NATO, Josip Brkić, three sessions have been held since March, during which a draft and proposal of the Reform Program for 2021 was created, which was unanimously adopted at the session on May 27 and was forwarded to the BiH Council of Ministers.

"In that document, we gave an overview of the difference between the reform programs in 2020 and 2021. It is an instrument that enables the continuation of cooperation with the Alliance, i.e. a list of all reform activities that BiH has taken in cooperation with NATO," said Brkić.

He stressed that BiH is continuing the process of cooperation with NATO, and that the Reform Program does not prejudge membership or discuss major political issues. For now, we know that this legal framework and structure of cooperation between BiH and NATO satisfies the member countries of the Alliance," Brkić explained.

Dušanka Majkić (SNSD), a member of the Joint Committee from the House of Peoples of the PA BiH, said that the Reform Program deepens cooperation with NATO, but noted that it does not define BiH's membership in the Alliance.

She stressed that the entity of Republika Srpska cannot impose a neutral stance on BiH on the issue, just as BiH cannot impose NATO membership on the RS.

Member of the Joint Committee from the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH Dragan Mektić (SDS) stressed the need to explain to the citizens of BiH where BiH is at the moment in the process of NATO integration.

"This is an action plan, not a document that defines something. Has BiH activated the MAP Membership Action Plan and where is it in that sense? In this country, no one knows exactly where we are when it comes to NATO membership," Mektić stressed.

Zukan Helez (SDP), a member of the Committee from the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH, points out that the relevant institutions have made a decision that BiH wants to join NATO and that it is now irrelevant who was part of those institutions at that time.

"The RS authorities cannot prevent the decisions made by the relevant state bodies that made the decision to join the NATO organization. The sooner we become members of NATO, the safer we will be. We must be completely ready to join NATO, otherwise, there would be no purpose at all," said Helez.
