Missing Persons Institute of BiH and ICMP are strengthening cooperation

FENA Press release

SARAJEVO, June 23 (FENA) - The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) and the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina (INO) continue to strengthen cooperation in resolving the issue of missing persons after today's signing of the agreement in Sarajevo.

“The agreement strengthens our cooperation with the aim of finding and identifying as many missing persons as possible, in accordance with the rule of law, in order to support the right of all families of missing persons to truth and justice,” said Matthew Holliday Head of ICMP’s Western Balkans Program.

To date, the authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the support of ICMP, have found and identified 75 percent of the approximately 30,000 people whose disappearance was reported as a result of the 1990s conflict.

"This agreement will allow us to further strengthen efforts to find the 7,000 missing persons that are still being searched for in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Holliday said.

“Today's agreement is a step forward in terms of cooperation between the Missing Persons Institute and the International Commission on Missing Persons. This is a refinement of the already existing agreement through technical cooperation, and thanks to that, the procedures in the process of searching for the missing will be more efficient and faster. We thank ICMP for its work and cooperation so far and we hope that future cooperation will be even more efficient so that as many families as possible exercise their rights and find out the fate of their loved ones,” said Nikola Perišić, Chairman of the Board of Directors of INO.

In order to find missing persons who are still being searched for, new information on potential hidden graves is needed. ICMP’s “Report Location” app is available on ICMP’s and MPI’s websites, allowing anyone who has such information to report it anonymously, ICMP said.
