SARAJEVO, March 3 (FENA) - The war of aggression against Ukraine could enable Russia to establish political, military and economic domination and control over the Western Balkans, believes the Society for Threatened Peoples-Germany.
The Society warns that there is a danger that such aggression against a sovereign state will encourage other dictators to try something similar.
"There are fears that the current armed aggression against Ukraine could spread to the Western Balkans, i.e. to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo," said former High Representative in BiH Christian Schwarz-Schilling, assessing the current situation.
Jasna Čaušević, an expert on Southeast Europe for the prevention of genocide, expressed fears that Russia wants to open a new front in Europe in order to divert attention from the attack on Ukraine.
"Separatists in Bosnia and Herzegovina, primarily the entity of Republika Srpska, can create an artificial crisis in order to ignite a new war in this country," Čaušević believes.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borell expects that Russia will not limit itself to Ukraine and states that similar scenarios are conceivable for Moldova, Georgia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has already announced additional NATO assistance to Georgia, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and another 500 EUFOR troops have been sent to Bosnia and Herzegovina on 24 February.
"For the countries of the Western Balkans, which have declared their membership in the EU and NATO, negotiations on the agreement must begin immediately. As the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen declared for Ukraine's entry into the EU, the same request must apply to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is a convincing conclusion of what has been happening in recent days," emphasized Schwarz-Schilling.
