Brammertz: Denying genocide is the last stage of committing a crime

SARAJEVO, April 7 (FENA) - I have been coming to Bosnia and Herzegovina for 14 years and I have never seen more cases of genocide denial, as the last phase of the most heinous crime and glorification of war criminals, which does not mean that people thought differently but they were just more careful in expressing their opinions, and today no one is afraid to say that anymore, said Chief Prosecutor of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) Serge Brammertz.

He is on a multi-day visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of drafting a report for the United Nations Security Council and today he gave a lecture today to students at the University of Sarajevo.

Speaking about the work of prosecutors' offices in BiH in prosecuting perpetrators of war crimes, he said that there had been some progress over the years, but it would be far from the truth to say that investigations are conducted in a perfect way, especially considering that an indictment has been filed in The Hague against 161 people, more than all other international tribunals combined, but that number is still very small if it is known that 3,000 people are under investigation in BiH.

“We are only partially satisfied because more processes should be conducted at the middle and high level. However, regional cooperation is the most worrying, since Croatia does not provide what it should within that cooperation, and there are also problems in cooperation with Serbia. It is inconceivable for me, someone who is a prosecutor and who believes in justice and who does not want to see impunity, that dozens of war crimes suspects have found refuge a few kilometers away from the place where the investigation is being conducted,” says Brammertz.

When it comes to glorifying war criminals and denying genocide, Brammertz called on the international community to react more strongly because what is the point that the United Nations is forming an International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia if its decisions are not accepted and respected, and he asked how is it possible that some political parties are proud that their supporters are war criminals.

It is clear to him that the citizens are dissatisfied with the legal system in BiH, but he is of the opinion that the greatest responsibility lies with politicians who must approach all these issues much more responsibly and maturely.

In the end, he underlined that the denial of genocide is the last phase of committing this crime, because it is a criminal purpose of inciting the commission of such a crime, destroying the community and insulting the victims of that crime.
