SREBRENICA, July 11 (FENA) - The President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts in The Hague (IRMCT) Graciela Gatti Santana addressed those present in Potočari at the commemoration dedicated to the victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
"Dear victims, survivors, mothers of Srebrenica and representatives of other victims' associations, it is an honor to be here with you today, it really means a lot to me as the new president of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Courts that I can be with you in Potočari and commemorate the 27th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica so soon after the beginning of my mandate," Gatti Santana pointed out at the beginning of her speech.
She also referred to the fact that she participated in one of the conferences yesterday.
"Yesterday, I had the honor of participating in the Heroines of Srebrenica conference where I had the pleasure of meeting some of you," she said.
She pointed out that keeping the truth is the essence of being in Srebrenica today.
"I realized that whatever language we speak, wherever we come from, the name Srebrenica carries such weight and significance that people all over the world know it. It awakens a range of memories and emotions that can lift a person from the deepest depths of despair to a true belief in the human spirit and hope for the future. On the one hand, Srebrenica means cruelty, atrocity, inhumanity, then loss, pain and indescribable sadness, however, on the other hand, it means enormous courage, resilience, persistence and the possibility of reconciliation. Srebrenica transcends all ages, all religions, all cultures," said Gatti Santana.
She expressed solidarity with all those who lost their loved ones during the atrocities that took place in Srebrenica.
"First of all, I personally, as a mother and wife, can only imagine the agony that you victims went through. Despite the irrefutable verdicts of the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, the Mechanism of the International Court of Justice and the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which proved beyond any doubt that genocide was committed in Srebrenica, we still face those who refute the conclusions of those courts, who deny your suffering. However, we know the truth, we stand for the truth and we can find comfort in those judgments that speak for themselves, but we must remind ourselves that those who use such rhetoric are in the minority. Although they are loud, the name Srebrenica resonates much stronger," said Gatti Santana.
