MOSTAR, March 23 (FENA) - The United World College in Mostar (UWC Mostar) opened the ‘Model of United Nations’ Conference today, which will last until Saturday, March 25, and will gather around 250 participants from 33 countries around the world.

The guest of honor of this year's MUN conference is Ioannis Piliouris, the Head of the regional office of the OSCE mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina, who opened the conference and expressed his satisfaction that he is in Mostar to support this event.

“I am very happy that I can support this event and remind about the international status of UWC and the international importance of Mostar, as a city of different civilizations and cultures,” Piliouris pointed out before the opening of the conference.

Coordinator for public relations and communications of UWC Mostar, Adela Velagić, said that MUN will gather around 250 participants from 33 countries in Mostar this year.

During three days, students will discuss a range of current global issues with delegates representing 33 countries, through work in MUN committees and councils, including the Security Council, the United Nations Human Rights Council, the United Nations Environment Program and the International Maritime Organization.

In addition to influencing awareness of global issues and developing public speaking skills, the conference brings together young people from different parts of the world and gives the opportunity to break down stereotypes and create open inter-ethnic friendships.

“This is the model of the United Nations, and that is why we first want to spread awareness of what is happening in the world, and then give our opinion on solving these problems, as future leaders,” said one of the MUN delegates-participants from Syria, Mehyar Wannousse.

MUN stands for Model United Nations, which is a simulation of the United Nations where students take on the roles of delegates representing different countries or organizations in various committees, such as the General Assembly, Security Council, and Economic and Social Council. The purpose of MUN is to provide a platform for students to improve their public speaking, research, negotiation, and critical thinking skills, as well as to learn about global issues and diplomacy.
